    COMPANY PROFILE

The skills shortage facing South Africa is having a major impact on the economy. Political factors and the crime rate is further worsening the situation as people opt to emigrate to other countries for a better life.

The state through its ASGISA (Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa) and JIPSA (Joint Initiative on Priority Skills Acquisition) initiatives is attempting to rescue the situation. ASGISA is a commitment by government to half unemployment and poverty by 2014.

According to the ASGISA document published on the government website, unemployment is currently at 26%. The goal of reducing unemployment to below 15% and halving the poverty rate to less than one sixth of households will not be achieved without sustained and strategic economic leadership from government and effective partnerships between government and stakeholders such as labour and business.

It is stated that the single greatest impediment for public infrastructure and the private investment programs is the shortage of skills which include artisans. The shortfall is due to the policies of the apartheid era and the slowness of our education and skills development institutions to catch up with current acceleration of economic growth.

The recapitalisation program for FET (Further Education and Training) institutions is another sterling attempt by the state to address the skills shortage. However, public FETs alone will not be able to address the skills shortage due the fact that they are hamstrung by long –winded bureaucratic processes, inadequate funding and staffing issues. It is now time for more private training providers to emerge. The establishment of JTK’s educational facility is for the purpose of facilitating skills development for employees inside companies as well as for the unemployed who want to enter the mainstream of education and the labour market. This is in line with the Umsumbomvu youth fund initiative.

Jtk is an equal opportunity company providing employment as well as educational opportunities for deserving individuals. It’s target population will be but is not limited to the previously disadvantaged, black men and women and the physically disabled. JTK operates mainly within the maritime industry providing service and repair to local and foreign vessels. JTK’s reputation for quality workmanship and speed of delivery is well renowned.
